Good Nutrition is a Prerequisite for Brain Function
Studies show that those suffering from chronic substance use typically suffer from nutrient deficiencies and malnutrition which greatly affect the brain. These deficiencies also affect the body.
That is why our Power Recovery Treatment Program incorporates food for the healing process of addiction.
At A WISE Retreat, nutrition education plays a big role in our addiction recovery program.
We not only assess our clients with a thorough nutrition and health assessment when they first arrive at A WISE Retreat.
We also educate our clients on the importance of nutrition for health and well being. Our clients are included and educated in food preparation and menu planning. Most importantly, we feed our clients a well balanced and diversified diet daily.
We provide whole foods that boost brain health, alleviate withdrawal symptoms and speed up the recovery process. At A WISE Retreat we only use foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
We serve whole foods that contain amino acids, L-Glutamine, and Antioxidants. These foods help re-balance the chemicals in the brain – and decrease cravings, aid in sleep, combat depression and anxiety. Good nutrition improves overall health and confidence in recovery.
Eating These Foods Will Help Keep You on the Road to Recovery
For addiction recovery – and ongoing Wellness – a well-balanced diet of complex carbohydrates, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and protein is critical.
The complex carbohydrates found in legumes (e.g., beans, lentils and peas), root vegetables (e.g., potatoes and carrots), pastas, rice and bread are helpful. Fresh vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli and carrots are essential. Fresh fruit is needed – including bananas, apples, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Proteins such as lean meats, chicken, fish, cheese and eggs.
We now know that combating addiction takes more than traditional and modern therapies and more than medications and harm reduction. Overcoming addiction takes a human touch: empathy and compassion.
Addiction Recovery takes time, persistence and patience. Recovery from substance abuse takes good nutrition with whole foods, fresh water, daily exercise, restorative REM sleep, meditation – and human connection.
